Political commentator and media mogul, Dele Momodu, has dismissed calls for Nigeria’s presidency to remain in the South in 2027, as reported by Vanguard on Thursday, 17 July, 2025.
Momodu responded directly to comments made by PDP elder statesman, Chief Bode George, who had insisted that power should shift to the South.
Momodu disagreed strongly, saying that such arguments are outdated and unrealistic.
He stressed that elections should not be based on zoning, but on numbers and the ability to win votes nationwide.
According to Momodu, Nigeria’s political arithmetic favors candidates with broader national support.
He noted that the North has 19 states, while the South has 17, and said ignoring this reality would be a political mistake.
He argued that if a Northerner like Atiku Abubakar can secure the highest number of votes, he should be allowed to lead.
Momodu said Nigerians must stop prioritizing regional origin over political strength and electoral viability.
Momodu also challenged the belief that the South must produce the next president because President Tinubu is from the region.
He said the focus should be on who can win the election, not where the candidate is from.
He added that Atiku’s wide appeal across Nigeria makes him the most formidable challenger in 2027.
According to him, the opposition should unite behind a candidate who can gather votes from all parts of the country.
Momodu stated that democracy is about majority rule, not regional rotation.
He said insisting on zoning weakens the opposition and distracts from the real goal of removing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from power.
“This is not about zoning; it’s about numbers. The North has 19 states, the South has 17. You can’t ignore the arithmetic. If a Northerner like Atiku has the numbers and Nigerians vote for him, so be it,” he said.
