Former Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Anthony Sani, has asserted that the North is unlikely to support Peter Gregory Obi’s presidential bid in 2027 due to a lack of trust.

In a recent interview with Daily Post Nigeria, Sani also cast doubt on Atiku Abubakar’s chances of defeating incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming general elections.

According to Sani, the North is expected to lean toward Tinubu out of respect for the late President Muhammadu Buhari, who remained loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC) until his death.

According to Daily Post, he noted that Buhari’s political base is unlikely to back any candidate outside the APC, even posthumously.

Sani stressed that the North is wary of trusting Obi with a single-term promise, referencing former President Goodluck Jonathan who had pledged a single term but later sought re-election.

He added that the idea of rotational presidency also disfavors Atiku, as many Nigerians—both Northern and Southern—support zoning for national unity.

Commenting on the opposition coalition, Sani stated that neither an Atiku-Obi nor an Atiku-Rotimi Amaechi ticket would be sufficient to unseat Tinubu.

He criticized the opposition for lacking a clear policy alternative, especially on key issues like fuel subsidy removal, which all major candidates supported during the 2023 elections.

Sani further argued that while Nasir El-Rufai is intellectually capable, his lack of street-level political influence limits his electoral value.
