The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has said that if Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, becomes the presidential candidate of the ADC-led opposition in 2027, Atiku Abubakar cannot serve as his running mate.

During an interview with Channels TV, Keyamo explained that Atiku, having already served two terms as vice president, is constitutionally barred from holding that position again.

He further argued that Obi would risk losing the support of his core base in the Southeast if he runs as the running mate of Atiku. According to Keyamo, many religious leaders who previously backed Obi would likely withdraw their support under such a scenario, as they would be unwilling to campaign for an elderly Muslim presidential figure.

Keyamo noted that these dynamics would significantly weaken Obi’s appeal and diminish his chances ahead of the 2027 election.

He said, “Don’t forget that, that Southeast demography that supported him, once it’s Atiku, they will pull out, they will not support him. The pastors cannot come out campaigning for an 80-year-old Muslim president. They will not do that, he will lose that demography. If you put Peter Obi as the candidate, Atiku cannot even be the vice to start with because he has done two terms as Vice President. So, he cannot be Vice President again.”
