During an interview on Arise News on Tuesday from 08:47, September 23, 2025, former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Daniel Reyenieju, expressed strong reservations about the presidential ambitions of Mr. Peter Obi, particularly in the context of the South-East region’s long-standing quest for the presidency.

Reyenieju warned that Obi’s political strategy could inadvertently “risk the chance of the South-East.”

His comments came against the backdrop of Obi’s recent pledge to serve only a single term if elected president in 2027, a proposal that has drawn both support and criticism across the political spectrum.

Reyenieju argued that a one-term presidency for an Igbo candidate would be a disservice to the region, which has been waiting for decades to produce a president.

He expressed doubt that the region’s people would be content with a truncated four-year tenure.

“Obi has to be very careful because he is going to risk the South-East’s chances. If Obi comes, he will serve only one term, and that could be the end for the South-East,” Reyenieju stated,

He emphasized the need for a sustained period in power to truly address the region’s issues and establish its place at the helm of Nigerian leadership.

The former lawmaker called for Obi to reconsider his approach, suggesting that he needs to be “called to order” by his supporters and elders from the region.

“He has to wait,” Reyenieju insisted, highlighting the importance of a strategic and patient approach to the presidency.

He stressed that the South-East has “waited for this long” and should not settle for a term that might not provide the necessary time to bring about meaningful change and political stability for the region.

Reyenieju’s concerns reflect a broader debate within the South-East about the most effective path to the presidency.

While many of Obi’s supporters see his one-term pledge as a sign of his commitment to good governance over political gain, critics like Reyenieju view it as a missed opportunity to consolidate power and ensure a long-term political dividend for the Igbo people. See, More, Here>>>>
