Bayo Onanuga, who serves as Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has cautioned Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, against teaming up with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 election.
Onanuga said Obi would not enjoy the same level of enthusiastic support he received during the last election if he agrees to run alongside Atiku next time.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time, monitored by DAILY POST on Thursday, the presidential aide insisted that despite various political calculations by opposition figures, President Tinubu’s administration would retain power in the next general election.
He argued that the president’s record in office would be his strongest campaign point when the time comes.
Onanuga maintained that Obi’s core supporters, who backed him strongly in 2023, might not be as willing to rally behind him if he accepts a vice-presidential slot under Atiku.
He said: “If Peter Obi allies with Atiku in 2027, he will not get the blind followership he received in 2023; it will not happen because he wants to be president, but they want him to be Vice President.”
He described the alliance talks as mere political experiments that would not threaten the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, Obi, Atiku, and other notable politicians are part of an opposition bloc that recently embraced the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their new platform ahead of 2027.
Both Obi and Atiku have also indicated interest in contesting the presidential race again.
