Veteran actor and political figure Kenneth Okonkwo has voiced concerns over the growing unease within Nigeria’s two major political parties—the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)—regarding the rising influence and promotion of Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview with Arise TV, Okonkwo noted that both parties are increasingly frustrated by how effectively Peter Obi is being marketed to Nigerians across various platforms. He attributed this momentum to the vibrant and determined efforts of the Obidient Movement, which he believes has injected youthful energy and focus into Nigeria’s political landscape.
Although Okonkwo has not formally aligned with any political party, he expressed unwavering support for Obi’s vision. He described himself as “Obicentric,” stating that the movement around Peter Obi has offered him a sense of purpose and direction amid Nigeria’s ongoing governance challenges.
Addressing doubts about religious divisions in voter support, Okonkwo pushed back against claims that northern Muslim voters would not back a Christian presidential candidate. “Anyone claiming that northern Muslims will not support a Christian is simply not telling the truth,” he said. According to him, such narratives are outdated and misleading.
He further criticized the leadership structure of Nigeria’s dominant parties, suggesting that putting elderly individuals at the helm of political affairs has led to stagnation. He highlighted that these parties, once the pioneers of digital campaign strategies in 2015, are now complaining about the Obidient Movement’s dominance on the internet—a space they once controlled.
“Engaging the people is the first step in marketing a political vision,” Okonkwo said. “We are doing that effectively, which is why the old guard feels threatened.”
As political activities heat up in anticipation of the 2027 elections, Okonkwo’s remarks reflect a broader shift in the Nigerian political environment, where grassroots movements and digital activism are playing increasingly influential roles.
