Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has spoken about the serious risks he took to help Rotimi Amaechi become Governor of Rivers State in 2007.
In an interview with Channels TV, Wike said he was deeply involved in the struggle that led to Amaechi’s eventual victory and had to secretly move Amaechi to Ghana during the tense political period. He said that the situation was so dangerous that he feared for his own life.
Wike said at one point he had to tell his wife to take their children away to safety. He said he also handed over important items to her, preparing for the worst in case something bad happened to him.
In Wike’s words: “In the name of almighty God I put my life to it. In fact, it came to a point I called my wife and said, ‘Listen, take my children, I don’t know what will happen now, take them away. See what I have take this, if survive it is okay, If I don’t survive that is how God wants it.
