Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the AAC, has shared how he first experienced police brutality as a student in 1992.
Speaking In a video shared by Sahara TV from 39:27, Sowore stated that he joined other students from the University of Lagos to protest against the then-Head of State Ibrahim Babangida. He explained that the protest led to his arrest along with several other students.
Sowore said they were packed into a cell and exposed to tear gas until they lost consciousness. He said a few days later, he and 47 other students were expelled.
In Sowore’s words: “I first got arrested by the police around 1992 at the University of Lagos when we were doing Babangida must go. It was a brutal experience, we were arrested, packed inside a cell and teargassed till we passed out. Few days later the school was closed after that and I was expelled from the university alongside 47 students. They used to be known as Unilag 47. So that is my first taste of police brutality”
