Prof. Alkasum Abba, Political Historian and University Administrator, has stated that the primary motivation behind Nigeria’s first coup in 1966 was regionalism and not corruption.
In an interview with Trust TV from 12:10, Abba said most of the coup plotters were from Eastern region and they targeted political figures and military officers from certain regions. He said they killed the Premier of the Western Region and the Premier of the Northern Region, including military officers from both the Northern and Western regions.
Abba said in contrast, the Premier of the Eastern Region Michael Okpara was not killed. He said Major Ifeajuna, who carried out most of the killings, even drove to Lagos and was seen drinking Coke with Michael Okpara, the Premier of Eastern Nigeria.
In Abba’s words: “They didn’t kill the premier of the eastern region, in fact Ifeajuna who did a lot of the killings drove to Lagos and was seen with Michael Okpara drinking coke. And when we asked they said Archbishop Makarios came to visit and he did not leave. They did not kill any senior military officer from the eastern region” See, More, Here>>>
