According to a report by Sky News on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, US President Donald Trump says Russia holds the “upper hand” in ongoing efforts to negotiate peace with Ukraine, arguing that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy must “get his act together and start accepting things.”
In an interview with the German newspaper Bild, Trump also criticized Ukraine’s European partners, accusing them of “talking too much” and failing to “deliver” meaningful support to Kyiv as the war approaches its fourth year.
Trump has taken the lead in the latest attempt at diplomatic intervention, presenting a 28-point peace proposal aimed at ending the conflict. However, both Russia and Ukraine have rejected the plan in its current form. The framework has met significant obstacles, particularly regarding whether Ukraine would be compelled to concede territory to Russia and what guarantees could protect Kyiv from future attacks by Moscow.
When asked which side he believes has the stronger negotiating leverage, Trump responded, “There can be no doubt about that. It’s Russia. It’s a much bigger country.”
Zelenskyy has said he intends to present the United States with an updated version of the peace plan with “obvious anti-Ukraine points” removed. In response, Trump remarked, “He needs to get his act together and start accepting things.”
Trump also commented on Europe’s involvement in the process. While saying he appreciates the “current bunch” of European leaders, he argued they are “not doing a good job” supporting Ukraine. “They talk too much. And they’re not delivering. We’re talking about Ukraine. They talk, but they’re not delivering. And the war just keeps going and going,” he said. View, More,
