Bishop Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese and Convener of the National Peace Committee, has stated that it is not correct to say there is a genocide against Christians in Nigeria.

According to a report by Vanguard on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Bishop Kukah said the term “genocide” is often misunderstood and misused in public discussions. He explained that genocide is not determined by the number of people killed, but by the intention behind the killings. He said even if millions of people are killed, it does not automatically mean genocide has occurred unless the killings were done with the goal of wiping out a specific group.

Bishop Kukah stated that the key factor in identifying genocide is whether there is a clear intent to eliminate a group of people based on their identity or faith.
