In a recent interview from 7:29 on Channels TV, Hon. Enemi George, Spokesperson of the Rivers State House of Assembly, revealed key details about the impeachment proceedings against Governor Sim Fubara and his deputy. George explained that the Assembly’s actions are strictly legal and aimed at protecting the constitution.
“Wike walked into the Abuja meeting and locked us in. He said, ‘This is the last day; we must settle,’” describing the intervention by the former governor during attempts to resolve disputes between the state government and the legislature. According to him, previous political solutions, including presidential interventions, had failed to address repeated violations of the law by the governor.
George stressed that Governor Fubara has consistently breached constitutional provisions, including failing to submit audited accounts as required under sections 125 and 126, and appointing unapproved officials to ministries without the Assembly’s screening. He noted that billions of public funds are being spent without oversight, budgets for 2024, 2025, and 2026 have not been presented, and ministries are operating outside the law.
He further stated that the House of Assembly is acting to preserve checks and balances and prevent a dangerous precedent where governors could act without legislative or judicial scrutiny. George emphasized that while he may personally have political affiliations, his actions as spokesperson represent the collective duty of the Assembly, not partisan interests.
On the controversy surrounding Christmas-period funds given to legislators, George said, “We rejected the money because I don’t want to go to prison; there is no constitutional provision for that,” underscoring the Assembly’s commitment to lawful management of public resources.
George concluded by reiterating that the impeachment proceedings are about upholding the constitution, ensuring accountability, and protecting the interests of the people of Rivers State, not about politics or personal vendettas.
