In a recent interview from 8:32 on Trust TV, political strategist Tunde Fabiyi spoke about the escalating crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its potential consequences ahead of the 2027 general election. He argued that the party must urgently address internal contradictions to restore credibility and prevent further erosion of public confidence in its leadership and political relevance.
According to Fabiyi, “Wike told the PDP that they shouldn’t present a candidate in the 2027 election. Who does that?” He described the statement as shocking and deeply concerning, highlighting how influential figures within the party can undermine cohesion and public trust. Fabiyi warned that such comments risk creating confusion among members and supporters while projecting weakness to the broader electorate.
He explained that political parties rely on unity and clear direction, not contradictory messages from senior members. For the PDP, allowing influential figures to make public pronouncements against participation in elections is a threat to internal discipline and organizational credibility. Fabiyi stressed that discouraging the party from presenting a candidate is equivalent to surrendering before the contest begins, which could damage its national image irreparably.
Fabiyi also highlighted that despite current setbacks, the PDP still has the opportunity to rebuild its structures and rally its base ahead of 2027. He urged party leaders to take decisive action, reaffirm commitment to democratic processes, and distance themselves from statements that appear to sabotage the party’s electoral prospects.
He concluded that Nigeria’s democracy thrives on competitive political parties, and the PDP must demonstrate focus, discipline, and responsible leadership if it hopes to remain a credible opposition force. According to Fabiyi, failure to act decisively could cement perceptions that the party is no longer a viable platform for national leadership. View, More,
