A young widow in Plateau State has appealed for help after receiving repeated threats from bandits who killed her husband and 39 other residents in the Mushere community of Bokkos Local Government Area.
According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, 13th December, 2025, the widow, identified only as Nanbam, told the global NGO, “Equipping the Persecuted,” that the attackers have demanded she marry their leader, threatening to kill her and her three children if she refuses.
Nanbam recounted the attack that claimed her husband’s life in August, describing how the assailants surrounded the village and carried out a brutal massacre. “In my husband’s case, they cut open his body and removed his heart before throwing him into a pond,” she said.
She explained that the threats began immediately after her husband was killed. The bandits used his phone number to call her and insist that she marry their leader and convert to Islam, exploiting her vulnerability as a young widow.
“I thought they were joking and I told them that over my dead body will I marry someone who killed my husband and the father of my children,” Nanbam said, highlighting her refusal despite the persistent threats.
The widow revealed that she relocated to her hometown in Mangu in an attempt to escape the bandits, but the calls and threats continued. Her family advised her to change her phone number, which temporarily reduced the harassment.
Despite taking precautions, Nanbam said she recently received another threatening call warning her that the attackers know her location and would harm her, her children, and other family members if she continued to refuse the marriage proposal.
She described living in constant fear, mourning her late husband while trying to care for her children, but feeling unsafe due to the ongoing threats. “Right now, my life is in danger and I don’t know where to run to where they will not trace me,” she said.
Nanbam also stated that she reported the threats to the police, but her case has seen little progress.
According to her, the authorities said the calls could not be traced due to the use of multiple numbers and requested money to pursue the investigation, which she could not provide.
She appealed to authorities and humanitarian organizations to intervene, emphasizing that she and her children remain at serious risk while the perpetrators continue to operate with impunity. View, More,
