Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore has stirred fresh reactions following comments he made during an interview on TV Platinum from 0:20, where he spoke about plans to intervene in the continued detention of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Speaking on the programme, Sowore said he and his associates were prepared to take steps to secure Malami’s release from custody, stressing that the former justice minister is legally entitled to bail and the freedoms that come with it. According to him, the issue goes beyond personalities and speaks directly to the protection of fundamental human rights.

“When we leave this place today, we want to go and help to bail Malami out of Kuje Prison. We are planning to go there because he is entitled to not only the bail that has been granted but the freedom that bail has,” Sowore stated.

He explained that his position was rooted in principle, not political sympathy, noting that no Nigerian should be unlawfully detained once a court has granted bail. He argued that selective enforcement of the law and disregard for court orders undermine democracy and the justice system.

Sowore, who has himself been a victim of prolonged detention despite court orders granting him bail in the past, said his experience has made him more sensitive to cases of alleged abuse of power by state authorities. He maintained that the rule of law must apply equally to everyone, regardless of their past actions or political influence. See More
