According to the report from the Sun on Sunday, January 18, 2026, Reverend John Joseph Hayab, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, has shared an account of personally challenging former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai over inaccurate public statements.
Rev. Hayab recounted a direct encounter with the former governor following statements made through broadcast media that the CAN chairman believed misrepresented the facts.
“I had that experience during the (Nasir) El-Rufai administration,” Rev. Hayab recalled. “When he went on television and radio and said things that were not true, I went to him personally.”
The religious leader described presenting evidence to counter the governor’s claims during their private meeting.
“I told him, ‘This thing you said is not correct,’ and I showed him the figures,” he said. “He had no choice but to accept it.”
While acknowledging the possibility of differing motivations, Rev. Hayab emphasized that the factual evidence he presented was indisputable.
“He may have had other agendas, but he could not dispute the facts I presented,” Rev. Hayab stated.
The account illustrates the CAN chairman’s approach to advocacy—combining direct engagement with public officials and evidence-based dialogue to address concerns affecting Christian communities in northern Nigeria. See More
