In a recent interview from 14:51 on Arise TV, Chijioke Ihunwo, former chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, spoke on the ongoing political crisis involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.
The situation in the state has become tense as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly pursue impeachment proceedings, while external actors are widely perceived to be influencing the lawmakers’ actions. Ihunwo emphasized that Governor Fubara was elected by the people of Rivers State and must be allowed to govern independently.
“What Wike is doing to Fubara, if it were done to him, everybody would just run away in Rivers State,” he stated, criticizing the former governor’s influence over the current political dynamics. Ihunwo explained that the Federal Capital Territory Minister, a former governor and political godfather, is reportedly manipulating assembly members to destabilize the current government. He argued that such interference is undermining democracy and preventing progress in the state.
Highlighting the economic implications, Ihunwo noted that investors are hesitant to engage in Rivers State due to the ongoing uncertainty, affecting job creation and development projects. He called on members of the State House of Assembly to act independently of any external pressure and focus on representing their constituents. He also appealed to the president and the All Progressives Congress to step in and restore order, emphasizing that peace and stability are crucial for governance.
Ihunwo further defended Governor Fubara, stating that any political agreements with former leaders should not override the mandate given to him by the people. He insisted that the governor has conducted himself with integrity and has shown commitment to development despite the crisis.
Concluding, Ihunwo urged all political actors in Rivers State to allow Fubara and his deputy to complete their tenure peacefully, stressing that the future of the state’s governance and economic growth depends on ending external interference and maintaining political stability. See More
