Political Analyst and legal practitioner, Barrister Darlington Agomuo has expressed scepticism over repeated assurances by security agencies that they are close to apprehending notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, describing such claims as unconvincing and long-standing.
Agomuo made the remarks during an interview from 9:47 on Voice of the People (VOP) TV while reacting to ongoing security challenges in the country, particularly in the North-West, where banditry has persisted despite sustained military operations.
According to him, Nigerians have for years been fed with the same narrative of imminent success, yet the situation on the ground appears largely unchanged. He argued that constant repetition of official claims without visible results has weakened public confidence in the government’s security strategy.
“Every time you will be hearing we are closing in on Turji Bello since how many years now,” Agomuo said.
The political analyst noted that Bello Turji has remained in the public eye, allegedly releasing audio messages, making threats and even granting interviews, a development he said raises serious questions about intelligence gathering and operational effectiveness.
Agomuo stressed that insecurity has gone beyond mere criminality and has become a national crisis affecting economic activities, social cohesion and citizens’ trust in state institutions. He argued that when high-profile suspects remain at large for years, it creates the impression that the state lacks either the capacity or the political will to act decisively.
He further warned that prolonged failure to neutralise prominent bandit leaders emboldens other criminal groups and sends a dangerous signal that lawlessness can thrive without consequences. According to him, this also fuels resentment among citizens who feel abandoned by the government. View, More,
