Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has issued a stark warning to United States President Donald Trump, accusing him of exhibiting the arrogance that has historically preceded the downfall of rulers, according to a tweet on X on the 9th of January. Khamenei’s comments were reported on Iranian state media this week amid growing domestic unrest and rising tensions between Tehran and Washington.

The backdrop to his remarks is a wave of nationwide protests across Iran that began in late December 2025 over severe economic hardship and currency collapse. Security forces have responded with harsh crackdowns, and the government has restricted communications and blamed foreign influence, particularly the United States and Israel, for fomenting unrest.

Khamenei has repeatedly rejected external criticism of Iran’s handling of the protests, dismissing demonstrators as “vandals” influenced by foreign powers. He has also rebuffed calls from President Trump and other foreign leaders for restraint, and accused them of hypocrisy and interference in Iran’s internal affairs.

In his message directed at Trump, Khamenei drew on historical parallels, invoking ancient figures and former rulers to emphasise his point about the fate of arrogant leaders:

“The US President who judges arrogantly about the whole world should know that tyrants & arrogant rulers of the world, such as Pharaoh, Nimrod, Mohammad Reza [Pahlavi] & other such rulers saw their downfall when they were at the peak of their hubris. He too will fall.” — Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. See More
