According to the report from the Sun on Sunday, January 18, 2026, Reverend John Joseph Hayab, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, has commended former U.S. President Donald Trump for what he describes as a nuanced understanding of Nigeria’s security challenges.
Rev. Hayab noted an evolution in Trump’s public statements regarding violence in Nigeria, highlighting the leader’s willingness to acknowledge the full scope of the humanitarian crisis.
“Trump first said Christians are being killed. Now, after more reports, he is acknowledging that Muslims are also being killed,” Rev. Hayab observed. “That shows he is a sensitive and reasonable leader.”
The CAN chairman emphasized that Trump’s approach transcends religious considerations and focuses on the fundamental issue at hand.
“His focus is not religion; his focus is to get rid of terrorists,” he stated. “And everywhere in the world, terrorists are terrorists.”
Rev. Hayab’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about international responses to Nigeria’s security situation, where various communities—both Christian and Muslim—have suffered casualties from terrorist attacks, banditry, and communal violence across different regions of the country. See More
