In an interview with The Sun News on Sunday, December 14, 2025, Hon. Isaac Kekemeke, Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), South West, reflected on the achievements of President Bola Tinubu, his prospects in the 2027 presidential election, and other national matters. Kekemeke, who previously served as Commissioner for Works and a member of Ondo State’s House of Assembly, was also Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state. He currently serves as Board Chairman of the Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST).
Kekemeke said he had aspired to the governorship in 2023, emphasising that his vision, which remains unchanged, was centred on creating a prosperous and peaceful Ondo State. “Our aim has always been to ensure citizens have meaningful work and opportunities to contribute to wealth creation,” he said. “The focus was on harnessing the state’s science, technology, natural, and human resources. To have a wealthy state, the people themselves must be actively involved in generating wealth. Education, healthcare, agriculture, and tourism were the key areas we planned to develop.”
He praised President Tinubu’s administration for taking bold and decisive economic actions over the past two years, acknowledging that while these measures have caused some temporary difficulties for Nigerians, they are essential sacrifices for long-term gains. “We are beginning to witness these benefits as commodity prices gradually decrease and the naira strengthens against the dollar and other foreign currencies,” Kekemeke noted.
Highlighting inclusivity under the current government, he observed that areas where APC struggled in 2023 are now showing stronger support, particularly in the South-South, South-East, and parts of the North Central, North East, and West. He added that many Nigerians, recognising the challenges and temporary hardships, are acknowledging the President’s significant efforts to reform the country and are now willing to back him through the remainder of his tenure.
Looking ahead to 2027, Kekemeke expressed confidence that a second term for President Tinubu would further transform Nigeria. “For every fundamental challenge we’ve faced as a nation, President Tinubu has made courageous decisions, fully aware of potential backlash, yet prioritising the nation’s welfare. APC is poised to perform even better in 2027 than it did in 2023,” he stated.
Kekemeke painted a picture of Nigeria’s precarious state before Tinubu took office, stressing the president’s role in stabilising the country. He said,
He said, “If he had not won the 2023 elections, probably, the dollar would have been between N3,000 and N5,000 against one dollar.”
He added that without Tinubu, Nigerians might have faced empty fuel stations and an economy on the verge of collapse. A second term, he argued, would consolidate gains, reduce queues at petrol stations, lower prices, and strengthen the economy, while ongoing projects and reforms become increasingly visible at the macroeconomic level.
On security, Kekemeke said the President’s declaration of emergency measures is complemented by collective citizen responsibility. “The army and police cannot handle insecurity alone. All Nigerians must ensure that banditry is curtailed. We must stop supplying arms, food, and other support to criminals, and even senior citizens who negotiate with them complicate matters,” he said.
On the issue of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Kekemeke emphasised that his conviction by a competent court stands, while noting President Tinubu’s inclusive and compassionate leadership. He suggested that a pardon could be considered if Kanu renounces violence, stating that such a development would not affect the 2027 election outcome. Kekemeke also explained that the Southeast’s alignment with APC, coupled with tangible development in the region, ensures broad support for the party regardless of Kanu’s incarceration.
Regarding opposition politics, Kekemeke stressed the importance of a strong opposition in a functioning democracy. “I am a social democrat and progressive; I believe opposition is necessary to provide checks on the ruling party. It is the responsibility of opposition leaders to organise and strengthen their parties, not the duty of APC,” he said. He added that individuals joining APC due to the President’s performance should not be discouraged, while urging opposition leaders to consolidate and play their role in a healthy democratic system.
