Public Affairs Analyst, Shehu Mahdi has alleged that coordinated political campaigns were carried out both within and outside Nigeria by individuals determined to remove former President Goodluck Jonathan from office ahead of the 2015 elections.

Mahdi made the comments during an interview on Channels Television from 16:44, where he reflected on the political climate of that period and its lasting impact on the country.

Speaking on what he described as an intense and well-funded political operation, Mahdi claimed that several actors travelled across the world to lobby foreign governments, institutions, and opinion-shaping bodies against Jonathan’s administration. According to him, these efforts formed part of a broader strategy aimed at influencing international perception and amplifying domestic opposition.

“They were all over. They went to America. They went everywhere, they want Jonathan removed,” Mahdi said, stressing that the political campaigns were not limited to local mobilisation but extended to international arenas where narratives about Nigeria’s security and governance challenges were being shaped.

Mahdi argued that while Jonathan faced genuine security challenges, particularly from the Boko Haram insurgency, some political interests exploited the crisis to build external pressure against his government. He said those actions contributed to the intense scrutiny Jonathan faced from the global community in the run-up to the election.

The analyst noted that the consequences of such politically motivated international lobbying continue to influence Nigeria’s political environment. He warned that turning global platforms into tools for domestic political battles risks damaging the country’s reputation and sovereignty. View, More,
