Bishop Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese and Convener of the National Peace Committee, has stated that the claim that over 1,200 churches are burnt in Nigeria every year is misleading.

According to a report by Vanguard on Saturday, November 29, 2025, Bishop Kukah said no one has reached out to the Catholic Church to confirm such figures, and that the people spreading the information never ask him or other Catholic leaders what the actual number is. Kukah stated that the Catholic Church does not rely on hearsay or unverified data.

Bishop Kukah said the Catholic Church keeps proper records and does not exaggerate facts, which may be why those making such claims avoid involving the Catholic Church. In his words: “They are saying that 1,200 churches are burnt in Nigeria every year, and I ask myself: in which Nigeria? Interestingly, nobody approached the Catholic Church to get accurate data” View, More,
