According to an interview with the Sun on Sunday, January 25, 2026, Chief Chekwas Okorie, founding national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has provided a breakdown of the 2023 presidential election results in southern Nigeria, emphasizing Peter Obi’s remarkable performance despite limited campaign resources.

In his analysis of the electoral outcome across the region, Chief Okorie detailed the distribution of victories among the three main presidential candidates.

“In the southern part of Nigeria, there are 17 states. President Tinubu won five states, four in the South-West, out of six states; and one in Rivers, that is South-South. That’s five states,” Chief Okorie stated.

The APGA founder noted that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s performance in the south was particularly limited.

“Atiku Abubakar won one state, which is Osun,” he revealed.

Chief Okorie then highlighted Peter Obi’s dominant showing across southern Nigeria, attributing his success to factors beyond financial resources.

“Peter Obi defeated them in 11 states, without a large war chest, just by the mere fact of his popularity and the movement he triggered,” he concluded.

His assessment underscores the significant support Peter Obi commanded in southern Nigeria during the 2023 election, particularly in the Southeast and parts of the South-South, where he won the majority of states despite reportedly having substantially less campaign funding than his major opponents.
