Popular Nigerian Islamic cleric, Sheikh Gumi has criticized those who are against negotiating with bandits.
This statement was contained in a post that Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike shared on his official X handle on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
This statement is coming after the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu secured the release of Kebbi school girls and some Niger secondary school students.
In the post that surfaced online, Sheikh Gumi stated that Kidnapping is a lesser evil than killing soldiers. He said it is not in the Bible or Quran that people should not negotiate with bandits.
He said if the negotiation is to bring peace and stop bloodshed, he will continue to engage in it.
Here is what Lere Olayinka wrote on his official X handle;
“That word “we don’t negotiate” I don’t know where they got it from. It’s not in the Bible. It’s not in the Quran.
“In fact, it’s not even in practice. Everybody is negotiating with outlaws, non-state actors, everybody. So who got it and where did they get that knowledge from?”. View, More,
