A United States lawmaker, Riley M. Moore, has raised serious concerns over the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, describing the situation as grave and demanding urgent international attention.
Moore made the remarks during an interview on Newsmax2, days after returning from Nigeria where he carried out an on-the-ground investigation into reported attacks against Christian communities.
Speaking on the programme hosted by Tracy Sabol, Moore said Christians in Nigeria are being systematically targeted because of their faith. He described the situation as one involving killings, persecution, and martyrdom, stressing that the violence has reached an alarming level.
“Our brothers and sisters in Christ are being persecuted, murdered, and martyred for their faith,” Moore said during the interview. He noted that the findings from his visit reinforced long-standing concerns raised by human rights groups and faith-based organisations about the plight of Christians in parts of Nigeria.
Moore disclosed that the investigation was conducted under his leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, following a directive from President of the United States. He expressed gratitude to President Joe Biden for entrusting him with the responsibility to lead the inquiry, describing it as a moral and legislative duty.
According to Moore, the United States has a responsibility to speak out and act against religious persecution globally. He emphasized that America’s Christian heritage obliges its leaders to defend persecuted Christians wherever they are found.
“We are a Christian nation – we must stand up for Christians. This is truly right and just,” he stated.
The lawmaker also hinted that the findings from the investigation could influence future congressional actions, including hearings, resolutions, or policy recommendations aimed at addressing religious violence in Nigeria. View, More,
