Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has sparked fresh national debate after stating that only two regions—the South-West and the South-South—contribute more to Nigeria’s federal purse than they receive from it.

Sani made the remarks on his verified Twitter account, referencing official economic data that outline the imbalance in federal revenue generation and allocation across the country.

According to Sani, the disparity in contributions is not merely economic but tied to structural and developmental challenges faced by other regions. He identified the North and the South-East as examples of zones that reportedly take more from the federal pool than they contribute, attributing this to two major factors: insecurity and geographic limitations.

Sani noted that the persistent insecurity across many northern states has weakened economic productivity, discouraged investment, and stifled industries that would have otherwise expanded the region’s revenue-generating capacity. Banditry, terrorism, and communal conflicts, he insisted, have forced thousands of farmers, traders, and small business owners out of work, with significant implications for national revenue.

The former lawmaker also emphasized that being landlocked has placed additional limitations on both the northern region and the South-East. Without access to seaports and with limited transport infrastructure, he explained, these regions face higher logistical costs and reduced competitiveness in trade and industry. View, More,
