Dr. Billy Gillis-Harry, President of PETROAN, has warned that Nigeria would have experienced severe petroleum product shortages without imports over the past several months.

Speaking on ChannelsTV from 12:31, Gillis-Harry stated, “If there are no imported products, I can tell you that in the last 6, 7, 9 months, Nigerians would have been looking for alternative sources of products which may cost us more.”

He explained that PETROAN supports both the Dangote refinery and the importation of petroleum products from other sources because Nigerians need these products to fuel economic growth. The association president emphasized that availability and affordability of petroleum products should be the primary concerns in the sector.

Gillis-Harry noted that PETROAN members are willing to purchase from the Dangote refinery but do not see the efficiency being claimed regarding the refinery’s production capacity to meet the country’s daily consumption needs. He called for a more practical approach where the refinery’s actual daily production is clearly established and consumed first, with imports filling any supply gaps.

The PETROAN president stressed that the current situation requires empirical evidence rather than claims. He suggested that if the Dangote refinery could consistently demonstrate its production output and ensure timely product delivery, marketers would make it their primary source.

However, he maintained that multiple supply sources remain necessary to ensure Nigerians have continuous access to petroleum products. Gillis-Harry argued that restricting supply to a single source, regardless of its capacity claims, would risk creating shortages that could significantly harm the economy.

He concluded by emphasizing that the focus should be on serving Nigerians effectively rather than on disputes about import licenses and market dominance, as the ultimate goal is ensuring energy security and economic stability for the country. View, More,
