Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the PDP, has argued that Peter Obi’s failure to rein in what he described as excessive bigotry, anger, and quarrels of his supporters has triggered a bit of resistance against his political ambition, particularly as he seeks relevance within the ADC presidential primaries.
Speaking during an interview from 6:45 on Channels Television, Showunmi dismissed claims that Obi is the most dangerous opposition threat to President Bola Tinubu and the APC ahead of 2027. He said the political environment that boosted Obi’s performance in 2023 has changed significantly, especially in the Southeast.
According to Showunmi, governors currently in office across the region are now more assertive, performance-driven, and inspirational, making it difficult for Obi to dominate the space as he previously did.
He argued that Obi may struggle to replicate the overwhelming electoral figures he recorded in the Southeast during the last election.
He acknowledged that Obi helped energize a movement aimed at breaking long-standing political barriers for the Southeast but insisted that poor control over extremist sentiments within that movement has weakened its broader national appeal.
Showunmi stressed that party primaries remain unpredictable. He said unexpected results often emerge, citing how Rotimi Amaechi finished second in APC primaries.
On the ADC’s internal structure, Showunmi described Atiku Abubakar as a dominant political force with deep experience in party contests. He cautioned Peter Obi against using past election results to calculate future elections, urging that fresh analysis, polling, and benchmarking need to be done.
In his words, “Unfortunately, his (Peter Obi’s) inability to tame the excessive bigotry and the anger and the quarrels and all of his people has kind of made a lot of people have a bit of a pushback. Hey, we’ll see. They’re going to have to count the votes. They’re going to have to count the primary.” See More
