Segun Showunmi, a senior chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has publicly criticized former presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing him of lacking strategic and structural thinking in his political career.

The comments, which have sparked debate across political circles, were made during an interview on Hard Copy, a popular political programme aired on Channels Television, on Saturday, January 31, 2026, according to a report by Daily Post.

During the interview, Showunmi argued that Obi’s approach to political organization demonstrates a reactive mindset, rather than one grounded in proactive, long-term planning.

He suggested that the former presidential candidate moves from one political engagement to another without establishing a coherent framework for his activities, which, in Showunmi’s view, reflects laziness in critical political thinking.

“Every time he’s moving around. I don’t deal with that kind of laziness. When it comes to structural thinking, Peter Obi is very lazy. He is too lazy to think that if he had remained in APGA all this while, he couldn’t have built the crowd he has now,” Showunmi said.

The PDP chieftain emphasized that political success depends heavily on careful planning, strategic alliances, and systematic approaches to maintaining influence.

According to him, Obi’s current prominence in national politics does not stem from disciplined organization but rather from opportunistic maneuvers lacking depth and long-term vision.

Showunmi further suggested that had Obi remained in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), he could have developed a more stable and loyal support base over time.

Instead, his movement between parties, Showunmi argued, indicates a preference for immediate visibility over the development of enduring political structures.

“Leaders need to think ahead and develop systematic strategies to maintain influence and achieve results in politics,” he said. “Consistent, well-structured thinking is essential for long-term political success, and without it, a politician’s achievements may be unstable.”

According to Showunmi, the lack of structural focus in Obi’s political career represents a significant weakness, especially when contrasted with politicians who carefully build their internal party networks and grassroots support over extended periods.

By failing to engage with these structural dimensions, Obi, in Showunmi’s view, risks undermining his own long-term effectiveness within party systems. See_More…
