Political Analyst Chris Maduka has described the legal battle between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as a troubling sign of deepening crisis within Nigeria’s legislative arm.
Maduka made the remarks during an interview from 19:31 on Signature TV while reacting to reports that Akpabio had taken his colleague, Senator Natasha, to the Supreme Court over unresolved political and legal disputes. According to him, the development reflects a breakdown of internal cohesion and leadership stability in the National Assembly.
“When the president of the Nigerian Senate is taking another senator to court, don’t I tell you the centre cannot hold again?” Maduka said. “This is not just about personalities; it is about the health of our democratic institutions.”
The analyst argued that the Senate President, as the highest-ranking lawmaker in the country, should ordinarily play the role of mediator and stabilising figure, rather than being locked in prolonged legal confrontation with a fellow senator. He warned that such disputes, when escalated to the apex court, project an image of dysfunction and weaken public confidence in the legislature.
Maduka noted that while disagreements are inevitable in a democratic setting, mature political systems rely on dialogue, internal mechanisms, and political wisdom to resolve conflicts. He questioned why internal dispute-resolution channels within the Senate appeared ineffective in the current situation.
“This kind of escalation tells you that something is fundamentally wrong,” he said. “If leaders cannot manage conflicts within their own chamber, how do they expect Nigerians to believe they can manage national challenges?”
