Kunle Kuti, one of the sons of the late Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, has stated that Fela married his first wife while he was a student in England.
In a video from 14:00 shared by The Cable on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Kunle said his own mother got married to Fela when Fela returned to Nigeria around 1968. He stated that Fela did not tell his mother that he was already married at the time.
Kunle stated that in 1971, he was born and that as time went on, Fela eventually married 27 wives. He added that Femi, Yeni and Sola are the children of Fela’s first wife.
In Kunle’s words: “He got to Nigeria around 1968 or 1969 and he met my mother but he did not tell my mother he was married. So in 1971 they had me. Though they had their drama, a whole lot of things happened but Fela was very insistent like ‘You, you’re not going anywhere’. So fast-forward, he married 27 wives” See More
