In a recent interview on Signature TV from 13:26, Right Reverend Ikechukwu Egbuonu, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Oji River in Enugu State, shared insights from his visit to Nnamdi Kanu, who was sentenced to life imprisonment and is currently held at the Sokoto maximum correctional center.

“Nnamdi Kanu told me if Igbos were in the scheme of Nigeria, he wouldn’t have had reasons for Biafra,” the bishop revealed, quoting Kanu’s explanation of the motivations behind his activism and the Biafra agitation. Bishop Egbuonu described Kanu as calm, composed, and hopeful, despite being denied access to his wife and lawyer following his conviction.

The bishop said that the mood among the Igbo people following Kanu’s sentencing is one of deep sorrow and frustration. Many citizens perceive the verdict as unjust, pointing to disparities in how the Nigerian justice system handles different cases and the restrictions placed on Kanu’s appeal process.

During his visit, Bishop Egbuonu observed that Kanu remained focused on legal matters and resilient in spirit. The detainee reportedly pleaded for communication with his wife and his legal counsel, requests that were blocked due to lack of clearance from higher authorities. Despite these challenges, Kanu encouraged the bishop and expressed optimism that justice would eventually prevail.

Bishop Egbuonu also called on Igbo political and community leaders to unite in advocating for fair treatment of Kanu while promoting the political and economic inclusion of the Igbo nation. He stressed that Kanu’s imprisonment is not only a legal matter but also a socio-political issue that requires careful attention from leaders at all levels.

Concluding the interview, Bishop Egbuonu highlighted Kanu’s resilience, intelligence, and personal character, emphasizing the importance of understanding the man behind the headlines to address the broader challenges facing the Igbo people today. View, More,
