A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe has stirred political debate on social media following a Facebook post in which he reflected on shifting political loyalties and public perception in the South-East.
In the post, Igbokwe drew attention to what he described as the influence of political alignments on popularity in Ala Igbo, particularly as Nigeria inches closer to another election cycle. According to him, recent political moves by prominent figures have triggered noticeable reactions among the Igbo electorate.
“Peter Mbah joins APC, all of a sudden his ratings drops drastically in Ala Igbo. El-Rufai teams up with Peter Obi, all of a sudden his ratings climbs in Ala Igbo,” Igbokwe wrote.
His comments appear to reference the sensitivity of political affiliation in the South-East, a region that overwhelmingly supported Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2023 general election. Obi’s popularity in the zone has continued to shape political calculations, with endorsements or associations linked to him often seen as politically advantageous.
Igbokwe’s observation suggests that Governor Peter Mba’s alleged association with the APC may have affected his standing among Igbo voters, many of whom remain skeptical of the ruling party due to longstanding grievances over marginalisation and federal representation. Although Mba has not officially defected to the APC, speculations and political realignments have continued to fuel public discourse.
