‎In a recent statement via his official X account, public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has commended President Bola Tinubu for reportedly halting the promotion of his African Democratic Congress, ADC.

‎He described the decision as a positive step that shows restraint and willingness to listen to advice.

‎In his statement titled, ‘KUDOS TO TINUBU FOR HALTING THE SUFFOCATING PROMOTION OF HIS ADC: DO SAME ON YOUR UNPOPULAR TAX REFORM.’

‎”It has just been reported that Tinubu has shelved the unilateral promotion of his ADC. That is commendable. Even though it was reported that some retired Generals cautioned him on the implications of his suffocating promotion.

‎Tinubu should also look inwards and halt the implementation of his new tax regime implementation because:

‎It has been one tax too many ever since he descended into the political arena,” he wrote.

‎According to Shehu, the move has reduced political tension and prevented further division within the political space.

‎Shehu noted that concerns had earlier been raised by senior figures, including retired military officers, about the possible effects of pushing the ADC agenda too aggressively.

‎He said the decision to pause the promotion showed that the President could reconsider policies when necessary.

‎However, Shehu called on President Tinubu to extend the same approach to his economic policies, especially the proposed tax reforms.

‎He urged the President to halt the implementation of the new tax regime, which is expected to take effect in January 2026.

‎He argued that Nigerians are already overburdened by multiple taxes and levies.

‎He said many citizens have not seen clear benefits from the taxes currently being paid.

‎According to him, households and businesses continue to struggle, while the cost of living remains high.
