In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, human rights lawyer Maxwell Opara highlighted the urgency surrounding the appeal process of detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, stressing that the legal window for filing is rapidly closing. Speaking on the challenges facing Kanu’s preparation for appeal, Opara emphasized the tight deadlines imposed by the judicial system and the obstacles created by detention conditions.
During the interview, Opara stated that “We have the 19th of February; that is when his time to appeal will elapse,” underscoring the critical importance of timely legal action. He explained that Kanu, who is currently in custody in Sokoto, faces significant restrictions that complicate the preparation of his appeal, including limited access to electronic devices, legal resources, and basic facilities needed to organise complex documents.
Opara noted that although he and other senior lawyers are no longer formally representing Kanu, they continue to provide advisory support alongside a team of consultants who submit legal opinions and research to assist in the process. According to him, these contributions are crucial to ensure that Kanu’s constitutional rights are protected and that procedural errors during the trial are properly addressed in the appeal.
The lawyer also expressed concern about the mental and logistical strain caused by the detention environment, describing it as harsh and isolating. He emphasized that Kanu’s ability to prepare effectively is severely hindered without the necessary access to legal tools, making the looming February deadline even more pressing.
While Opara declined to predict the outcome of the appeal, he maintained that the strongest grounds lie in the trial court’s alleged denial of fair hearing, procedural irregularities, and failure to comply with Supreme Court directives. He concluded by stressing that all efforts must now be focused on navigating the remaining time effectively to preserve Kanu’s right to a proper appeal. See More
