Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Federal Government of selectively using anti-corruption agencies to target political opponents while shielding allies, warning that such actions undermine justice and democratic institutions.

Atiku made the remarks in a post shared on his official X handle on Thursday, January 1, 2026, where he raised concerns about the role of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in Nigeria’s political landscape.

In the statement, the former presidential candidate said, “Fighting corruption is essential, but when agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are weaponized against opponents while allies enjoy immunity, justice is mocked. Institutions must act without fear or favour.”

He stressed that political power is temporary, but historical judgment remains permanent, cautioning leaders against actions that could negatively define their legacy. According to Atiku, “Governments come and go; history remains.”

Atiku emphasized the importance of electoral participation as a means to address the country’s socio-economic and security challenges, listing issues he said have affected citizens across the nation. In his words, “Let us vote out hunger, insecurity, unemployment, dishonesty, corruption, abductions, lies, and propaganda.”

He further asserted that Nigeria’s future depends on leadership that prioritizes the welfare and dignity of its people. Atiku wrote, “Nigeria deserves better. Nigerians deserve dignity.”

Looking ahead to the next election cycle, the former Vice President described the period before 2027 as a critical phase for political organization and grassroots engagement. He said, “2026 is the year to till the soil. 2027 is the year of harvest.”
