Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker Honourable Martins Amaewhule has stated that he and his colleagues would rather resign than continue serving if Governor Siminalayi Fubara persists in refusing to present the state budget to the assembly.
Speaking during a house session broadcast by TVC News from 8:42, AAmaewhule identified that the crisis extends beyond personality conflicts. “It is not an issue between the FCT Minister and the Governor. It is an issue between the Governor and the Constitution. The Governor is a threat to our democracy. It is better we all resign and leave Fubara and those he wants to use to defraud Rivers people. We cannot continue to allow this to happen,” he said.
The speaker questioned the purpose of their legislative mandate if they cannot enforce constitutional provisions. “We sit here as elected people, and we cannot follow—we cannot enforce the Constitution. Then why are we here? Why are we sitting here? Why were we elected?” Amaewhule asked.
He expressed frustration with respected elders and community leaders who publicly support the governor’s actions instead of cautioning him about constitutional violations. According to the speaker, these influential figures applaud Fubara’s conduct rather than calling him to order.
He argued that respected leaders focus their appeals on the minister, who serves the President in Abuja, instead of addressing the governor’s constitutional infractions.
