Hon. Ibrahim Zailani, a lawyer and Bauchi State’s former Attorney General, has raised serious concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, saying the country should be deeply worried by the continued activities of Boko Haram and other armed groups.

Speaking in an interview with The Sun News on Sunday, February 1, 2026, Zailani described the state of insecurity as alarming, especially after reports that Boko Haram insurgents had killed a senior military officer.

According to him, such an incident should never be taken lightly in any serious nation. In his words, “It is alarming that Boko Haram can kill a brigadier-general and nothing happens.”

Zailani noted that insecurity did not start with the current administration, explaining that Boko Haram has existed for over 15 years. However, he stressed that once a leader assumes office, the protection of lives and property becomes a primary responsibility under the 1999 Constitution. He said Nigerians have the right to demand stronger action from the government.

The former Attorney General expressed concern that insurgents and bandits now appear bold and fearless, questioning why a country with a trained military has struggled for so long to defeat armed groups. He recalled past administrations where strong and decisive actions were taken when security officers were attacked, arguing that such firmness seems lacking today.

Zailani also reacted to comments by Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Zulum, who recently warned that Boko Haram was regaining strength and taking over more local government areas. He said this development shows that the problem is far from over and requires urgent attention.

According to him, insecurity has now expanded beyond Boko Haram to include banditry and other violent groups, making the situation more complex. He warned that Nigerians cannot enjoy economic reforms, development, or democracy without security, adding that life must come before any other benefit of governance.

On foreign assistance, Zailani said Nigeria should not shy away from seeking help where necessary. He welcomed support from the United States and other allies, stating that there is nothing wrong with accepting help when a country is overwhelmed by security challenges.

He concluded by urging the Federal Government to take firmer and more decisive steps, insisting that Nigerians deserve to feel safe in their homes and communities. See_More…
