In a pointed rebuke that cuts to the heart of Nigeria’s trust deficit in politics, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that any politician who fails to honour agreements suffers from a fundamental character defect, warning that credibility not power or wealth, remains the true currency of leadership.
Wike made the remarks while addressing supporters during a public gathering in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, as reported by TVC News from 10:37 on Tuesday, December 30th, 2025.
The former Rivers State governor stressed that political agreements are not limited to written documents but also include gentlemanly understandings built on trust and mutual respect. According to him, a politician who cannot keep to agreements undermines not only personal credibility but the stability of the political system itself.
He cautioned that no volume of completed projects, financial resources, or political influence can compensate for a lack of integrity, noting that once trust is broken, public confidence is almost impossible to restore.
Wike further linked the persistent crises within political parties to leaders who habitually renege on commitments, arguing that such behaviour erodes unity and fuels division.
The remarks come amid growing political realignments and early positioning ahead of future electoral contests, particularly in Rivers State and the wider South-South region, where loyalty, alliances, and trust continue to shape political outcomes.
