A Rivers State Lawmaker and Spokesperson of the House, Honourable Enemi George, has invoked his Ijaw ethnicity and ancestral lineage to note that the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara are constitutional rather than tribal in nature.
Speaking from 23:27 in media coverage by TVC, George highlighted his heritage from the Kalabari kingdom. “I come from Kalabari kingdom and I’m a descendant of the great Prince George Amachree of the Kalabari kingdom. It is said that there is justice where there is a harmonious functioning of the tripartite arm of government. It is said that there is peace, equity and social order when all and sundries subject themselves to the dictates of the ground norms and constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria,” he said.
The lawmaker rejected characterizations of the impeachment as ethnically motivated, arguing that constitutional matters should not be reduced to tribalism. “It is an anomaly to reduce constitutional matter to mere tribalism and ethnicity. If all of us wants peace and justice and a society that is well ordered then we must be subject to the provisions of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria. The legislature must be allowed to do it work without hindrances,” he stated.
George called on citizens to support the legislature’s constitutional role in holding the executive accountable. He argued that avoiding totalitarian dictatorship and lawlessness requires encouraging the assembly to follow constitutional procedures in impeaching a governor who refuses to obey the law. See More
