Political analyst Dele Fanimo has alleged that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, nurtured personal political ambitions long before emerging as governor, arguing that this influenced his early political choices and alliances.
Fanimo made the remarks during an interview from 10:20 on Channels Television and Voice of the People TV while commenting on the lingering political crisis in Rivers State and the strained relationship between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
According to the analyst, Fubara’s political calculations date back to his time as Accountant General of Rivers State. “Fubara has been oiling his inordinate ambition right from when he was Accountant General of that state. That’s why he could agree to any terms and conditions that Wike brought to the table,” Fanimo said.
He argued that the governor’s willingness to accept far-reaching political arrangements was driven by a desire to secure power at all costs, rather than a commitment to long-term political independence. Fanimo claimed that this early dependence laid the foundation for the current face-off between both camps.
The analyst further suggested that the breakdown in the relationship between Fubara and Wike reflects unresolved contradictions from the original political agreement that produced the current administration. He maintained that political alliances built solely on ambition, rather than shared ideology or mutual respect, are often unstable.
Fanimo also warned that the ongoing power struggle could continue to distract the state government from its core responsibilities. He noted that Rivers State requires focused leadership to address governance, security, and economic challenges, stressing that prolonged political battles risk undermining public confidence.
