An APGA Senator from Abia South Senatorial District, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has recalled how former President Olusegun Obasanjo hired Dr. Stanley Macebuh as a contrarian voice within his administration to demonstrate the value of dissenting opinions in democracy.
Senator Abaribe explained Obasanjo’s approach to governance in an interview with Arise TV from 8:22. “During the time of President Obasanjo, he hired Dr Stanley Macebuh as a contrarian as one of his special assistants. So when issues come up and people are going this way, he (Macebuh) goes the other way in order to give the other sense so that everybody understands that everybody should not pull in one direction. That’s what he used to do. He was a contrarian, playing the devil’s advocate and Obasanjo let him do that because he needed him,” he said.
The senator criticized the current political climate, describing it as dominated by excessive praise rather than constructive criticism. “We have now come to the point where some type of sickening sycophancy has now permeated the whole thing. And so everybody is a member of the choir. If you’re not singing in one direction, you’re seen as an enemy of the government. I’m not an enemy of the government,” he stated.
Senator Abaribe warned that individuals who perform for cameras in the Senate to gain favor from the presidency are actually harming rather than helping the government.
According to him, many politicians offer superficial defense of government policies simply to be seen as loyal by those in power. The senator argued that honest assessment of problems represents the essential first step toward finding effective solutions. View, More,
