Chief Dele Momodu, a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has attributed the recent wave of defections and political realignments across party lines to a collective search for a viable opposition platform, amid concerns over the political dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Momodu made the remarks during an interview from 3:16 on News Central Television on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while responding to questions on the increasing movement of political actors, including former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into the ADC.

During the interview, the interviewer drew attention to the growing trend of defections witnessed in recent weeks and months, questioning the underlying motivation behind the shifts. “But this movement, I mean, Peter Obi has moved. Yes, the constitution allows for freedom of movement and association, as the case may be. But we’ve also seen in Nigeria, in the last few weeks. Someone says weeks, you should be saying months,” the interviewer said.

“We’ve seen in the last few weeks a lot of movements across party lines, to one party or the other. What is this saying of our… Is it because of what the constitution says, or just the search for something better?” the question continued. Responding, Momodu framed the development as a natural political response to prevailing conditions within the country’s democratic space. “Well, of course, mankind is always in search of something better,” he said.

He stated that the current political climate had left opposition figures with limited options. “And in this case, we have no choice, because the ruling party, APC, has blocked all avenues against opposition,” Momodu said. Using a figurative description, he explained the pressure facing opposition actors. “So, when you are pushed to the wall, you either crack the wall, or you turn back and kick the man who has blocked,” he added.

Momodu said the ongoing realignments were driven by broader concerns shared by political stakeholders across party affiliations. “So, what is going on is that many stakeholders in Nigeria, because we’re all Nigerians anyway, are dreaded, that we cannot allow our president Tinubu to get away with a one-party dictatorship,” he said.

He identified the ADC as the emerging platform drawing individuals from different political backgrounds. “And that is why ADC has become attractive to a lot of us,” Momodu stated.

He further projected that the influx of politicians into the party would continue. “And I’m sure many people are still going to come from the direction of ADC, from the direction of PDP, from Labour, from NNPP, and so on and so forth,” he said.
