According to a report by Channels TV, on Saturday December 13, 2025, Prominent lawyer Tony Dania has issued a stark warning about the pervasive and deep-rooted nature of corruption in Nigeria, arguing that the system itself is structured to undermine independent action, even within the judiciary.

Dania pointed to the frequent issuance of contradictory judgments in political cases as a prime example of institutionalized corruption.

Dania stated that corruption has become so entrenched that it operates through the country’s formal institutions, lamenting the role played by members of his own profession.

“Corruption itself is institutionalized. Corruption itself in Nigeria such that, for example, look at the contradictory judgment political cases. Yes, that is to us abuse of court process.”

He did not spare his colleagues, claiming that lawyers themselves often facilitate this judicial misconduct by helping politicians obtain favorable, yet conflicting, court rulings.

“But it is we the same lawyers that help these politicians to go get the judgment. That is just one, I give you example.”

Dania used his own career as a human rights and student activist at Ambrose Alli University (Ekpoma) to explain his decision to steer clear of political appointments. He revealed that he had resisted numerous offers because he believes political office compromises the independence necessary to fight corruption effectively.

“There was a case. That’s why I don’t envy them fighting corruption. I refuse to take that any appointment. I was a very popular right activist myself and Festus Keyamo. I was the activist though not Keyamo on campus. Any person that finished from Ekpoma (Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma) will confirm that to you.”

He clarified that the pressure to conform and compromise integrity is too immense for anyone seeking to act independently within the system.

“Why am I not taking any political position? Because you are not independent to do what you are supposed to do.”

Dania concluded with a somber warning, noting that political figures have the power to deal with and embarrass anyone who refuses to participate in their schemes, a fate he seeks to avoid after witnessing the struggles of others.

“If you don’t want to play with them, they will embarrass you. They will deal with you. And I don’t want to fall in become a victim like my friend.” View, More,
