Chris Green, the Rivers State Coordinating Commissioner for Sports, has stated that heavy renovations are currently going on at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium. He made this statement after Former Governor Nyesom Wike stated that his political support group applied to the Rivers Government to use the Yakubu Gowon Stadium for their political rally but their request was refused.

In a video from 2:27 shared by Symfoni TV, Green said the level of construction work and hazards at the stadium makes it impossible for any event to be held there. He stated that he did not receive any application from anyone to use the stadium.

Green stated that if the Rivers government truly wanted to stop Wike’s group from holding their rally, they would not have allowed them to use Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, which is also a state government facility. He said the Gowon stadium is under construction and will be open to everyone once the work is completed.

In Green’s words: “If we stopped you from using this facility (Gowon Stadium), why are we allowing you using the Elechi Amadi polytechnic? It is government facility, it is open for everybody and so it is not true that anybody applied and was rejected” See_More…
