According to a report by Arise News From 2:49, on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the ongoing controversy surrounding the sit-at-home orders in the South-East has reached a critical juncture following insights from Elias Odoemena, a prominent representative of the Igbo Union.
During a recent dialogue centred on the economic and security landscape of Anambra State, Odoemena articulated the union’s firm opposition to the recurring lockdowns while acknowledging the profound obstacles that prevent their cessation.
According to him, “We, the Igbo Union Ndi Igbo, are against it, but we are handicapped; it’s not only in Anambra.” He elaborated that this crisis transcends state boundaries, representing a systemic regional hurdle that disrupts daily existence, commercial operations, and the freedom of movement throughout the entire Southeast zone.
Odoemena highlighted the severe toll these disruptions have taken on various sectors of society, including merchants, learners, and those in the transportation industry.
He observed that once-thriving commercial hubs now sit dormant, educational institutions are frequently shuttered, and medical facilities encounter operational hurdles as citizens remain paralysed by the fear of travel.
He further remarked that many households are now forced to organise their schedules around this pervasive anxiety, particularly on Mondays when the regional economy experiences a sharp decline.
In addressing the initiatives by the Anambra State Government to revitalise local markets, Odoemena argued that the anxieties of the business community must be prioritised.
He clarified that while the majority of shop owners are eager to resume their livelihoods and support their families, the genuine threat to their personal safety remains a significant deterrent.
He noted that it is contrary to human nature for individuals to avoid work voluntarily when faced with financial obligations and the needs of their dependants.
Furthermore, he cautioned against isolating Anambra State as the sole epicentre of the sit-at-home phenomenon. He pointed out that neighbouring states in the Southeast grapple with identical pressures, even if they are sometimes less publicised.
Consequently, he believes the situation demands a comprehensive strategy rooted in constructive dialogue, enhanced security measures, and collective action from all regional stakeholders.
Odoemena concluded by advocating for a peaceful and measured response, calling on government officials to partner with community heads, trade unions, and influential groups to develop a sustainable remedy.
He stressed that coercive measures are insufficient to resolve the crisis and that the restoration of public confidence is the only way forward.
