According to a report by Channels Television From 1:04, on Monday, January 26, 2026, former Speaker Yakubu Dogara observed that the Nigerian political environment has undergone a major transformation since the 2023 general elections, suggesting that the factors influencing the next voting cycle will be entirely distinct.
He maintains that the period following the last polls has reshaped voter expectations, strategic alliances, and the internal loyalties of the opposition.
Dogara shared these insights during a discussion regarding the current capabilities and readiness of opposition movements. He contended that although public discourse is presently fuelled by frustration and emotion, such sentiments do not inherently result in structured grassroots mobilisation or victory at the ballot box.
From his perspective, winning an election requires cohesive organisation, innovative ideas, and consistent public outreach rather than a simple reliance on criticising the current administration.
The former Speaker emphasised that a significant portion of the populace who participated in the 2023 campaigns have since reconsidered their involvement.
He pointed out that some individuals are now disillusioned by internal friction within party ranks, a lack of cohesive leadership, and expectations that remain unfulfilled. Consequently, he believes the current political climate is fundamentally different from the atmosphere that defined the previous election cycle.
Furthermore, Dogara suggested that national dialogue should prioritise the immediate needs of citizens and the quality of governance. He noted that the public is far more concerned with tangible solutions to inflation, national security, joblessness, and the rising cost of living than with perpetual political manoeuvring. He warned that any political entity hoping to rebuild public confidence must offer concrete alternatives to the status quo.
He also addressed the perceived inactivity of certain political figures, arguing that silence should not be mistaken for a lack of influence. He remarked that political strategy often requires precise timing and that significant groundwork is frequently conducted away from the public eye before it is unveiled.
Reaffirming his assessment of the shifting landscape, Dogara Yakubu said, “So much has changed since 2023—many who worked for Peter Obi will not do so again.”
He finished by stating that anyone eyeing future electoral success must recognise these changes, as victory will require an ability to pivot to new realities rather than attempting to ride the wave of previous enthusiasm. See More
