According to a report by Channels Television from 19:01, on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Anambra State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has issued a rigorous warning to individuals he accuses of sabotaging the state’s economic health by enforcing closures of major markets on Mondays.
During a recent speech addressing the continuous disruptions to commercial activities, especially within government-regulated business districts, the governor made it clear that the period of the “sit-at-home” directive has reached its final conclusion.
Governor Soludo pointed out the contradiction currently unfolding across the state; while the majority of Anambra has resumed its typical Monday operations with active roads and public gatherings, several key marketplaces remain closed without justification.
He noted the irony of roadside hawkers conducting business freely on Mondays while major shop owners stay locked up despite the lack of any genuine security risks. The governor described this behaviour as a calculated attempt to suppress the financial advancement of Anambra and the broader South-East territory.
Reaffirming his leadership and his dedication to the state’s economic success, he said, “You can try this with any other governor, but not with this governor standing here.”
He stressed that his administration holds a constitutional duty to protect the livelihoods of the people and cultivate a flourishing business environment.
The governor further explained that the consequences of these weekly shutdowns go much deeper than a simple reduction in tax collections. He emphasised that local merchants are losing their customer base to competitors in other states, leading some businesses to move away permanently due to the instability. Because Monday serves as a critical day for trade, he maintained that keeping shops closed is a direct assault on the well-being of the populace.
The academic sector was also a primary concern in his address, as Soludo directed that all educational institutions must operate a standard five-day academic week.
He cautioned that any school remaining shut without permission would be permanently closed, arguing that the state’s children cannot achieve global competitiveness if their instructional time is being curtailed. He reminded those in the commercial sector that the government possesses the legal authority to revoke shop allocations for anyone who refuses to open for business.
He concluded by insisting that vital economic centres cannot be run according to personal preferences and called upon all citizens to support the government’s objectives, stating that the future of Anambra relies on total cooperation. See More
