The United States House Appropriations Committee has expressed deep concern over what it describes as the rapidly deteriorating state of religious freedom in Nigeria, warning that the country is “becoming one of the most dangerous places on Earth to follow Christ.”
The remark was shared in a statement posted on the committee’s verified Twitter account, underscoring rising attacks on Christian communities across parts of the country.
According to the committee, the issue was a key focus of a recent roundtable discussion led by U.S. Congressman Robert Aderholt, a long-time advocate for global religious freedom. During the session, Aderholt reportedly highlighted the alarming increase in deadly assaults, abductions, and displacement targeting Christian populations in several Nigerian regions.
The Appropriations Committee emphasized that the violence—often linked to extremist groups, bandit networks, and communal conflicts—has reached levels that demand urgent international attention. It noted that while Nigeria remains a key strategic partner of the United States, the escalating threats faced by Christians and other vulnerable religious minorities cannot be overlooked.
“We cannot ignore this crisis,” the committee stated, adding that American appropriators remain committed to defending liberty and upholding religious freedom worldwide. The statement also hinted at the possibility of increased congressional oversight and support for initiatives aimed at protecting at-risk communities. View, More,
